2000pts Imperial Guard vs. Blood Angels

Imperial Guard vs. Blood Angels

Had a fun throw-down with a good friend… I played my as yet unfinished Imperial Guard army, he played my Blood Angels army.

  • The mission was ‘Crusade’ (objectives) and I eeked out a victory by one point.
  • He achieved first blood and line breaker for 2 points
  • I held a single uncontested objective for 3 points, and he held none.
  • Although now that I think about it he could have simply moved Dante to his backfied objective (he rolled ‘immovable object’ on the personal warlord traits table and was thus a scoring unit) and he would have won by two points.
  • So… ‘technically’ I won but ‘really’ he won. :)

I’m still learning the rules so there was lots of looking things up… battle too probably 4-5 hours total. I think we hit 90% of the rules though (still haven’t done anything Psychic and no monstrous creatures, but covered pretty much everything else).

Great fun!

List Summary:

Blood Angels

  • 5 Assault Terminators in a land raider redeemer
  • Storm Raven, twinlinked lascannons, hurricane bolters, hunter/killer misiles, twin-linked heavy bolter.
  • 1 squad of 6 assault marines
  • 1 squad of 8 assault marines
  • vindicator
  • Furioso dreadnought in a drop pod with whirlwind missile launcher
  • Contemptor dreadnought with a Kheres Assault Cannon & Melta Gun
  • Dante

Imperial Guard

  • Ordinance battery with 2 Basilisks and 1 Medusa
  • Leman Russ Squadron with 2 Battle Tanks and 1 demolisher
  • 2 Vendettas
  • 2 Platoons (platoon command squad, 2x units of lasgun troopers).
  • 1 of the platoons has two chimeras
  • 1 of the platoons command squads has a single auto-cannon heavy weapons team
  • 1 company command squad with Astropath, Master of Ordinance, Commander of the Fleet
  • 1 manticore

1500pt Orks vs Blood Angels

I fielded my recently purchased, beautiful Ork army against my buddy playing my blood angels. Because I don’t get to play much the game was mostly learning the rules… but I had a great time! The Orks definitely have LOTS of dakka… but the list I brought mostly maxed at strength 6 & 7, which couldn’t touch the land raider or the dreadnoughts.  The deff rolla’s show promise though, now that I know how to use them! (D6 S10 attacks is nothing to sneeze at!).

Dakka Dakka Waaaagh!

Magnetizing the arms of the Warhound Titan

Below are the steps I took to magnetize the arms of my Warhound Titans.

I ended up using 3/8″ magnets, specifically 3/8″ by 1/4″ step sided magnets.
There is (barely) room for 1/2″ magnets (which I used on my Reaver) and if I could do it again I might use those…as the 3/8″ magnets are ‘slightly’ too weak.

This is where I chose to magnetize the arms.

League – Best Painted!

Wow, I won ‘best painted’ in the latest league at ATEase Games in Poway, CA with 1500 points of my blood angels army!!!

My army is on top of the dark grey foam on the right side of the picture in the middle.

There were some REALLY NICE armies on the table… Some great looking Necrons, Tyrranids, & Grey Knights in particular.

Video Monitor for Terrain

I’m super excited to have commissioned a pretty ambitious terrain project with the best miniatures terrain maker out there.. 3t studios. Long story short, I’m looking to have them create ‘inertia cradles’ for my reaver titan and my two upcoming warhound titans. In my mind I’m picturing gantries, cables, gothic/imperial architecture, etc.

Because I’m not very good at moderation… I’m also envisioning combining two of my hobbies… miniatures and micro-controllers. So… I’m working to embed video panels into the terrain piece. I’m envisioning a “1984 Orwellian” face proclaiming imperian 40K propaganda (probably “The emperor protects!”) and some smaller screens with what look to be moving dashboards showing the state of each titan.

I’ve actually made great progress… I purchased a 3.2″ LCD display module from 4DGL systems, an Australian company. Fortunately, Sparkfun resells their products so I don’t have to wait for trans-pacific shipments.

Finally, moments ago, I actually got video playback working for the first time! Obviously the video displayed in the terrain piece wont be a of my dogs… but hey, it works!

Privateer Press at ComicCon

Ms. P and privateer press at Comic Con.

My wife, Ms. P. scored tickets to ComicCon at the last minute… I asked her to check if they were selling the new Colossal’s expansion or if they had any of the old ‘studio’ brushes.  Man, would have been cool to head down there and play a demo game with one of the Privateer Press guys! <sigh>

Warmachine Cygnar vs. Retribution 20 points

warmachine cygnar vs retribution 20 points

warmachine cygnar vs retribution 20 points

Doh! I’m now 1/5 vs my nemesis Mr. A!! I’ve actually got agreement from him to ‘reset’ the counter to games played at the shop, so am 1:1 (tied!).

Which makes our next game ever so important!

Quick description of the game… we played the “Break The Line” game type, and while I was able to toast both of his light warjacks, he fragged my unit of long gunners with his stealthed Mage Hunters (they could shoot me, but I couldn’t shoot them, as I didn’t bring any anti stealth) and my Ironclad with his battle group. It could have gone either way if it was a basic game… but at the beginning on my turn 4 he controlled two of his zones and one of mine…so it was game over! In retrospect I don’t think I’d play this game again at low points values (anything less than 35 or so).

2x Forgeworld Lucius Pattern Drop Pods

2x Forgeworld Lucius Pattern Dreadnought Drop Pods

I just finished airbrushing the atmospheric ‘burn’ on the two ForgeWorld Lucius Pattern Dreadnought Drop Pods tonight. It’s difficult to tell from the picture because the standard drop pod isn’t there for size reference…but they are huge!

Excuses: I didn’t have a large enough back-drop to show one closed and one expanded like i’d like…and just moved my little light-box photo studio and don’t have the lighting like I like it yet… so I’m not supra happy with the pictures but am very happy with the models themselves.

  • The main external metallic is Alclad II golden titanium over gloss black.
  • The internal metallic is Alcad II steel with some dry-brushed mithril silver highlights.
  • The red is Createx Wicked Crimson over primer gray and black shadows.
  • The atmospheric burn is Alclad II jet exhaust.
  • Throw in a few Reaper MSP paints on the details and that’s it!

Game 8: At Ease Games Final League Battle!

At Ease Games final League Game pic25

And I (sort of) fielded the reaver titan Saevus Verum!!!

While my 1500 points of blood angels faired poorly… Mostly do some very effective Dark Eldar (Allen!) dropping in on my flank and punching lots of painful, nasty holes in my army in the first two turns… my Reaver Titan walked the battlefield!! W00t!!!

Our tournament organizer, Josh, controlled the Reaver at the end of each turn (after all other 8+ players resolved their player turns). It was fun putting the apoc barrage template down… while it did do lots of damage, the dice rolls definitely still matter and many of the troops/squads targeted were remarkably resilient to the apocalypse missile launcher.

On the bottom of turn 4 or 5 (I’m not sure as I was tabled at the bottom of 3), Saevus Verum was finally reduced to 0 hull points and Josh rolled a ‘6’ on the catastrophic damage table… BOOOM!!! reactor meltdown = 6xD6 strength ‘D’ AP2 hit. This was especially brutal on the two blood angels players who had lots of troops near the Titan (I feel slightly bad, but what a great narrative!!!).

In any case, I had a great time… even won the ‘best sportsman’ league award. Everyone at the shop has been really frikken cool…and patient with me as I learn the rules. I’m really enjoying the ‘gaming’ side of 40k… only problem now is that my painting isn’t going as fast! :)

Folks measuring out…24″ (if I remember correctly) from the Titan to see who got hit by the reactor meltdown.

Game 7: 2k vs. Chaos!

blood angels vs. chaos

Had a lot of fun playing Mike and Jay. Lost the line breaker and kill the warlord objectives, but took ‘first blood’ tertiary.

Have to think what I’d do differently… wasn’t that close and I should be doing better.

poor dice rolls for the loss!

Victory!!! (Warmachine 24 point Cygnar vs. Cryx)

Siege Brisbane vs. Deneghra

Well, I finally won a game vs. Mr A.! So I am now 1 win & 4 losses vs. him. At last I have a point on the board!

It was a 24 point battle, 24 points of my Cygnar army led by Siege Brisbane against his army led by Deneghra.

The objective was to hold as many of the three objectives in the middle of the board as possible, gaining 1 point for each objective owned at the end of each player’s turn. Basically I lucked out and was able to move first, which meant I captured 2 points off the bat. My army suffered many, many venom sprays but given the sheer amount of cover ignoring spray attacks fared decently to Mr. A’s poor dice rolls. My Charger went for an assassination attempt vs. Denny at the top of turn 3, which caused him to pull her into the backfield… he moved his heavy warjack back with her to block my line of site. While this did mean it was effectively impossible for me to assassinate his caster, I was able to claim points from the center objective which put me over the top points wise.

A fun game, feel refreshed on the WarMachine rules, ready for another game! And I found out there is a WarMachine league on Friday nights! Will have to check that out sooner than later.

Game 6: Tyranid Swarm!!!

HUGE game. 3 players with 2k points each (Me, Jim, Mark) against a single Tyranid player (Josh) running approx. 4k of ‘nids. Josh looks to be the best w40k player at At Ease Games… he knows almost all model stats by memory, is super fast at gaming (hard for me to keep up), but a really great player/opponent. I had tons of fun! We ran out of time (the store closes at turn 11)… my 2k points were essentially tabled (killed) by what I think was the top of turn 4. The ‘nids went after my three assault squads first, neutralized them, then knocked them out. Josh definitely knows what he’s doing.
